FOLLOW-UP: The Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 Are Nearly Perfect — Except 1 Glaring Issue

3 min readOct 11, 2024

I’ve been using the Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 for several weeks now and I want to love them, but there’s been one recurring issue that I just can’t get over. If you haven’t read my initial coverage of the Pixel Buds Pro 2, check it out below.

Allow me to set the scene: you’re walking through a busy downtown metropolitan area with your noise canceling earbuds doing some pretty heavy lifting considering the car horns and city sounds when all of a sudden, your music stops but only in one ear.

Connectivity has been a huge misstep for the Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 and it makes it difficult to use them if I’m doing something as basic as walking while my phone is in my pocket. The headphones check off every single box including sound quality (when connected fully), battery life, ease of charging, overall comfort and form factor, but it can’t seem to nail this one aspect.

Equipped with Bluetooth 5.4, this is actually the same issue I had with my AirPods Pro, but that was fairly isolated to a single intersection in my downtown area. Unfortunately, these sputters and trip-ups aren’t isolated and occur several times a day which makes them hard to love.

If this issue is able to be fixed in a future update, Google will have created the perfect pair of headphones and it could rest easy. Until then, I’ll continue to recommend the Nothing Ear (a), which seems to handle connectivity on Bluetooth 5.3 much better.
